CUNARD YANKS AND THE BEATLES
THE CASBAH COFFEE CLUB, WEST DERBY VILLAGE, LIVERPOOL
The Beatles first got together as ‘The Quarrymen’, playing skiffle.
Then they heard rock ‘n’ roll on the records arriving from America.
Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly.
The Beatles learnt the songs and played them at The Casbah Coffee Club.
A few miles from the city centre, it was Liverpool’s very first beat music venue – and the opening night was even mentioned in a local newspaper.
From The Casbah The Beatles moved on to clubs in the German port city of Hamburg.
THE CUNARD YANKS HAD BROUGHT AMERICAN RECORDS TO LIVERPOOL
The 1950s Cunard liners returned to Liverpool full of American goods.
As recalled by Liverpool poet Roger McGough and Ted ‘Kingsize’ Taylor.
